Mr Presumption- Lyric Annotation

The lyrics to the song “Mr Presumption” shows the emotions and the conflicts that occurred in his period of life. At the beginning of the song, the first verse shows that he is directly talking to the audience, us. The first verse illustrates that he is referring to a girl and that he wants that particular attention towards her. But she is showing her stubbornness towards him. In one of the lines of the song, “Mr Presumption//This may come as a shock to you//My bosom’s not displayed for you” shows that girls are not stereotyped as easy and then immediately assumes that he is a typical boy.

The chorus is a repetition of “What’d you know” which reinforces the message to the audience. This will make the audience step into the shoes of the person himself and feel what he is feeling at the time. The use of colloquial language illustrates the person who wrote the song is not strongly educated and from a working class. This is shown further into the song as bailiffs enter in the building. The repetition of the line is a question and also wants to emphasise the feeling he has towards this. It tries to grab the attention of the listener such that they can have some empathy towards him as he is being miss-interpreted as something else.

The Second verse shows inner depth of his feelings and that he is left with someone else’s problems and mess. “Danny’s in the nick, and he’s left us in the mess” interprets that his friend is in prison and this shows that his friend is trouble as now he has been left with the mess to deal with. The middle bit of the second verse states that the condition they live in is their own decisive decisions. This shows that the area they live in is not an upper class area but possibly a lower/working class area. “I got bailiffs at the door almost every other day now i'm sitting on the floor” this line immediately tells the audience that the trouble that they had to deal with was money as bailiffs had taken everything they have. At the end of the second verse a repetition of the line “Danny’s in the nick and he’s left us in the mess” shows that this has affected them a lot and now they are suffering rather than his friend, Danny. “Now I’m drowning in the bills and my heart behind my chest //Just hurts” illustrates his strong emotions towards this situation. It had a big impact and had changed his whole lifestyle.

The chorus is then repeated again reinforcing the message to stay in the listener’s mind. There is a slight difference to the first chorus and that is the quotes that are said in the brackets. The brackets seem to be voices of his emotions; “Just hurts”.

The final verse to the song just shows a repetition of the same lines that were used in the second verse. The use of repetition tried to gain the attention from the audience to feel the empathy towards the person that has to suffer his friend’s problems. But the last line of the verse, “Staring at my legs and you’re staring at my chest//And you’re making your presumptions your just like the rest” shows that someone is throwing accusations at him and comparing to him and as everyone has said this numerous of times, he’s sick of the same judgment and refers them “your just like the rest”. This shows some emotion that he’s upset that no one believes him and tends to jump into conclusions.

The final chorus shows that it is the end of the song. It also has a repetition of the previous choruses to emphasize the effect of the actual sentence.
